“So know (O Muhammad) that Laa ilaaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women. And Allah knows well your moving about, and your place of rest (in your homes).” [Surah Muhammad (47) :19]
This ayah shows us that knowledge is one of the conditions for the Shahaadah (testimony of faith) to be valid. How is it possible for a person to utter this statement and not know what it means?
Ask yourself a simple question: If you were asked to give a 30 minute talk on the Shahaadah, would you be able to do so? If not, then you need to ask yourself if you truly know what this statement means.
Here’s Imam As-Saadi’s (rahimahullah) tafsir of this ayah. As always, his explanation is concise yet comprehensive.
